April Skincare Routine

Over the last few years I have been developing a skincare routine and finding out which type of products my skin loves…. AND which products it doesn’t. I thought I would share with you my current routine and maybe update you every month or so if it changes and which products I have been trialling. I have dry/sensitive skin. I did think I’d grown out of my sensitive skin but after a little skin meh last year I have learnt that I definitely have not.

Morning Routine…

I start the day my washing my face with a drugstore face wash. Yes! No snazzy cleanser. I guess I just like saving my pennies where I can and I have found some great face washes that my skin adores. I tend to stick to a Simple or Olay face wash as they are gentle and nourishing for my skin. Every 2-3 days I also use a face scrub before washing my face with my usual cleanser. I just find the extra wash helps to get all that scrub off and makes my face feel fresh. I love the St Ives Apricot scrub for sensitive skin. It smells lovely and is great for giving me a subtle exfoliation. I try not to exfoliate my face too much as this can irritate sensitive skin.

After I have washed and dried my face I apply a serum. I used to skip this step but have found it just adds that extra hydration that I think my skin was lacking last year. My go to product is the Bare Minerals Skinlongevity Serum Essence. If I run out this stuff I go into a little panic as I think this is doing my skin the world of good. It just feels more hydrated and glowing after. I then apply my L’Occitane eye cream with my ring fingers, gently patting it in as the skin around the eye area is delicate. I finish with a moisturiser. At the moment, I am loving the Ren Global Protection Day Cream.

Evening routine…

In the evening, I have been loving removing my makeup with the Simple Micellar Cleansing Water. I use cotton pads to do so as I find it easier and less messy than a face cloth. They also act as a little extra exfoliation. I then wash my face as per my morning routine. I don’t use a face scrub in the evening.

Every week I apply a face mask. I tend to reach for a hydrating one unless I am having any skin problems. I love The Body Shop Honey and Oat mask but unfortunately they have stopped selling it. Luckily, I still have some left! What face masks would people recommend when I run out of this one?

After my face is clean and pampered, I use the serum essence and eye cream again. If my skin is particularly dry I swap the serum essence for my NUXE Face Oil. I only do this on pampering nights though as I find it too much for everyday use. For night time I go in with a richer moisturiser. At the moment, I am using the Liz Earle Skin Repair Moisturiser and so far I am loving the results! It feels thick and nourishing – like a proper hearty moisturiser!

There you go! This is my skincare routine at the moment! I hope you enjoyed this post. I tend not to change my skincare routine too frequently as since having a bad reaction to a product last year, I like to pinpoint the product that isn’t suitable for me before I test any others. My friend Sally swears by only changing one item in her skincare routine at a time and I have started doing this too! Great advice! It is really tempting to get over excited when buying new beauty products but try to rein yourself in! Make sure you remove your makeup EVERY evening and cleanse your face morning and night too! I also swear by drinking LOADS of water. It isn’t hard for me though as I just love the stuff. Skin can be unpredictable and although I do not have perfect skin (I still have the odd blemish… don’t we all!), I try to do as much as possible to look after it. Your diet is also important so get eating those greens!

  1. I love this! I used to use the St Ives Apricot Scrub and loved it! I just might have to pick it up again after reading this! Also, I have wanted to try the Simple products for such a long time so I will have to definitely have to give those a go!

  2. It’s definitely a good idea to only change one thing at a time but it’s so tempting to change products all at once! I actually used a Simple moisturiser for a few months and it made my sensitive skin even more sensitive, oddly enough 😏 Since I’ve switched to Olay, it’s been much better, especially with the redness around my nose! I think I definitely need to use a serum for extra hydration like you said – sometimes a moisturiser just isn’t enough! Do you have any recommendations for slightly cheaper ones? And It sounds awful but I’ve only just recently started using an eye cream! I get such bad dark circles under my eyes and I think it’s slooooowly helping but sometimes I get lazy and ‘forget’ to use it, especially at night when I just want to get to bed! xxx

    1. Changing one product at a time it such a great lesson I have learnt! When my skin broke out badly last year I was using a Simple moisteriser but I don’t think it was that because I used it afterwards and it was fine. I think I dried out my skin with a toner. You have to be so careful with products containing drying ingredients such as alcohol! I’m so cautious now though with products! There are some lovely brands out there as well and I love to try new things! I try to get free samples when I buy on places like Feel Unique and that is a great way to try out something without spending a fortune.
There are loads of great serums for a cheaper price. I like mixing mine up when trying to spend less! I love the Shea Comforting Oil from L’OCCITANE http://bit.ly/2oRe7vy (not a serum but acts as extra hydration). Or Clinique also have lovely serums… I imagine Ren, Bare Minerals and Liz Earle do some lovely serums too! Or even Olay – such a great brand! My Gran got me into Olay products and she always had lovely skin hehe 🙌 Maybe I will try out their moisturiser some time like you!
Eye creams are so great! I’m really paranoid about early ageing so want to do anything I can to prevent it! 😂 I may investigate eye serums soon…. 😉 xxx

    1. Aww thank you so much! Lovely to hear. I love skincare and if I miss my routine I don’t feel as fresh. Skincare is such a pampering moment of the day too. I can have some “me time”. Have you used any of these products before?

    1. It’s so good isn’t it! I love the texture of it and it feels like it is doing the job but with a more gentle exfoliation! Definitely one of my core products! Love your blog btw, definitely be bookmarking that one! x
